Thomas Challen Greenfield

THOMAS CHALLEN GREENFIELD, BSc., who was born on 31 May, 1893, died on 2 July 1960.

He was educated at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh, from 1905-11, and from 1911-14 studied at the University of Edinburgh where he graduated a B.Sc. in civil engineering.

He received his practical training under Sir Alex. Binnie, Son and Deacon. His training was interrupted by World War I, when he was commissioned in the Royal Engineers. He was wounded on active service in France and discharged in 1917.

In 1917 he was engaged on surveys and the preparation of power schemes for the Ministry of Munitions, and in 1918 became Resident Engineer on the construction of the Blaen-y-Cwm Reservoir under Sir Alex. Binnie, Son and Deacon.

In 1923 he became Deputy to Mr J.R.Fox, Waterworks Engineer, Barnsley, and in 1931 was appointed Water Engineer to the Borough of Douglas, Isle of Man, with full responsibility for the design and construction of all works. While he was Water Engineer at Douglas he also acted in a consultative capacity to the Isle of Man Government. On the formation of the Isle of Man Water board in 1947, Mr Greenfield was appointed Engineer and Manager. He retired from this appointment in 1959.

Mr Greenfield was the Author of a Paper presented to the Institution of Water Engineers, of which he was a Member.

Elected an Associate Member in 1919, he was transferred to the class of Members in 1937.

He is survived by his widow, three daughters, and one son.
